THE JAZZ NETWORK ~ "A GREAT PLACE TO HANG"

The premiere Jazz networking site that honors the legends, features new artists, promotes music education and live jazz worldwide!

A QUOTE FROM ONE OF THE BEST:

Will Downing

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

SPOTLIGHTED ARTISTS:

Jaijai,

The Jazz Network is a phenomenal place for musicians and music fans to hang out - thanks for creating a music haven for us all on the internet!

I love the fact that fans, up and coming artists, and established recording artists can all be in one place interacting with each other, listening to music, learning about each other and creating a community of jazz. I'm happy to be a part of it.

I particularly like the music education aspect of The Jazz Network as I have been mentoring kids for over 12 years now and have personally seen the difference it can make it their lives. Jazz is a living, continually evolving form of music with no limits and it touches our souls. Sometimes I think God Himself created it and gave it to us so we could reach deeper inside of ourselves and by doing so reach others.

Speaking of no limits, my new CD "No Limits" is about reaching beyond genre stereotypes and playing the music I love, all kinds of it...and The Jazz Network has "No Limits", either - I feel right at home!

Peace,

Nick Colionne

Hey Jaijai!

It's really cool to be on your site. Funny how out of the chaos (!) of the record industry's demise has flowered such a beautiful, organic connecting place for folks like us. We know there's something of more substance in each other that we were being denied because of an industry that had lost its way. It's nice to be able to go deeper and be more altruistic. In the words of my old boss, Whitney... "Can I be me!" Blessings to you in this endeavor.

Dear Jaijai,

Thank you so much for this wonderful presentation of The Soiree Band. I can't believe how quickly this all came together. One of the musicians in the band made the comment that you can feel the warm positive vibe when you visit this site. I totally agree with that statement.

Thanks for giving us jazz players a nice place to hang.

Sincerely,

Dear Jaijai,

You've done it again. Another great feature! We can't thank you enough for your support of our new project, "Thunder". It's so great to connect with people who really dig the music. Thanks so much for coming to the Vegas show and calling it "bass heaven"...LOL! It was great seeing you there. It would have been cool if your dad could have joined you. We know he was there in spirit.

Jaijai,

I find it quite amazing that here I am in the Spotlight so soon after arriving in this kaleidoscopic world of music! My musical journey has gone on all my life and my dream to set my music free into the world has been
growing in intensity for so many years.

Joining The Jazz Network was part of a major effort of will in taking the first steps towards releasing my dream and in the space of only a few weeks it seems that it is indeed taking flight.

My own recording of my blues ballad 'Can't Leave You Alone', released by me as a tentative first step, has risen in a matter of days from nowhere to the higher reaches of the blues chart at Reverbnation and for me this is a major achievement and a reward, however small, for so much hard work and dedication to that lover and tyrant called music that lives inside me!

I thank you for your encouragement, your support and for giving me this opportunity to promote my dream even more.

I arrived here with a dream and I now have a reality.

Thank you,
Tommie Brewster

The Jazz Network bridges the gap between music & technology, in a way that enlightens the mind, moves the body and stirs the soul. It's not just a community, it's an experience. And each time I experience this special place, my life hits a high note.

Dear Jaijai,

Many thanks for Spotlighting my latest trio CD "It's A Good Day," with my fine Italian bassist and drummer, Giovanni Sanguineti and Giovanni Gullino, our third recording together. We actually met through the internet after the bassist bought my first CD "Room At The Top" in 2002 and invited me to play in Italy in the summer of 2003. I've been touring and recording with them for the past 5 years! They are like my second family, and I feel very blessed.

What an honor and a delight to be a part of this wonderful and unique Jazz Community you have created out of your love and dedication for this music. You are a very special lady and you have given us such a gift by creating The Jazz Network. What a terrific way to meet and connect with old and new friends and hear some great music from artists that we might not have the opportunity to do without this remarkable website you've created!

I have some fond memories of your Dad and brother and it was a real delight to learn about The Jazz Network and to meet you!

Again, thank you so much! It's a privilege to be a member of this Jazz Network Family.

Love,
Patti Wicks

When one thinks of a family you often hear words like; togetherness, support, respect, admiration, understanding and sincerity. Every word and then some can be used to describe "The Jazz Network".

Since being a member I have had the pleasure to meet and interact with some of the most down-to-earth musicians from around the world. Everyday I look forward to meeting new faces and seeing those that I have connected with in the past.

Jaijai, I thank you personally for taking your dream and passion to a "whole 'nother" level. This network is a true testiment to your spirit ...Out of sight! Right on Lady...Right on!

Dear Jaijai:

What a wonderful thing you have created here and thanks so much for the fabulous feature you did for my music and me. As I am new to TJN I am fascinated by what you have created. There are so many talented artists here and it feels like I’ve gone to heaven. Your father and I were close friends over the years and Duffy still is. He played in my trio at Arturo’s in Miami Beach last summer. (2007) And I have worked with him off and on since he was 12 years old. I just know your father is very proud of you and the site is a work of art! You have created something of real value for the jazz community and all I can say is Bravo!

I feel that what you have started here at The Jazz Network set's the tone for serious networking amongst musicians who have had no choice but to take that independent path in order to be heard and generally acknowledged for who they are and what they bring to the art form. It's great to be in touch with many of my peers whom I admire but rarely get the chance to connect with. I also get the feeling that Jazz Network could be that missing link between the personal web site and all encompassing "data base umbrella". I think it's worth the investment in time and effort to touch base with the serious minded over here so let's all work to build a positive foundation on what has already been established.

So here it is! Finally a place where no matter who I pull up and give a listen I'm never ever put off or want to click it away. I believe you have really thought very carefully about keeping it real, as it were, and not just trying to gain meaningless quantity.

The artists I've encountered have been so talented and accomplished, that I wonder what I'm doing in their company. But when I reach into the music of my fellow Jazz Networkers, I find that we share the wonderful gift of commonality and originality that far surpasses the other music sites I've connected with. I know now The Jazz Network is a long awaited breath of very fresh air!

Thanks loads Jaijai.

What a privilege to have been a featured artist on the main page of The Jazz Network. I can’t thank you enough, Jaijai, for suggesting it and creating the opportunity. So often in our musical lives we are solitary beings, practicing alone, writing alone. But The Jazz Network is an affirmation of our community and our togetherness in the music. What a great opportunity to reach out and meet new people who have the same passion and dedication. Thank you Jaijai, for all you are doing to support the independent jazz musician and our wonderful art form…JAZZ. You have a powerful vision and it is touching us all. It is great to be a part of The Jazz Network. I will continue to spread the word.

All the best,

What a great place you have created, Jaijai. Thank you so much for your dedication and vision. We musicians benefit immensely, as it brings us closer together, allows for many of us to reconnect, or discover each other for the first time. I am still getting acquainted with the enormous benefits of having this independent place for communication between all of us - artists, fans, promoters, etc., and it is a real honor for me to be featured on the Jazz Network Main Page.

NICK COLIONNE
FEATURING "NO LIMITS"

NICK COLIONNE - Red-hot guitarist and vocalist Nick Colionne continues his blazing success into 2009. Nick has been described as "one of the most exceptional performers to come along in a long time". His newest CD, "NO LIMITS", on the prestigious label KOCH Records, has debuted to rave reviews and the first single, the title tune "No Limits", is climbing the charts. The CD reflects Nick's dynamic "live" performances with its blend of jazz, R&B and blues, with the added bonus of his rich baritone vocals.

Nick's previous CD "KEEPIN' IT COOL" produced the Top Ten hits "Always Thinking of You", "If You Ask Me" and "Keepin' It Cool", following in the path of his CD "JUST COME ON IN" which was also Top Ten with the mega-hits "High Flyin'" and "It's Been Too Long".

Colionne was honored with the prestigious 2007 International Instrumental Artist of the Year Award at the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards, succeeding 2006 winner Chris Botti. He is a three-time headliner on the All Star Smooth Jazz Cruise (now the Smooth Music Cruise), and is also the official Jam Session Host, duties he will be repeating on the 2009 Smooth Music Cruise as well.

Nick is frequently referred to as "the best dressed man in jazz", and he enjoys an on-going endorsement from the men's designer line Stacy Adams as well as a longtime endorsement with Epiphone Guitars who are currently featuring him in their national advertising campaign. The Chicago native has toured all over the world but still finds time to devote to mentoring children - he is in his 12th year of same at the St. Laurence K-8 School in suburban Elgin, IL.

It's no surprise that Nick Colionne's sustained chart-topping radio history and his incredible live performances, infused with his unique blend of jazz, funk, R&B and blues along with his rich vocals and engaging stage personality, have made him a force to be reckoned with.

SELF PRODUCTION AND SELF PROMOTION
PART ONE
RON KEARNS

There was a time not too long ago when an artist’s only chance of achieving radio airplay was to sign a deal with a record label. Because of the ability and affordability for artists to self-produce and self promote, a record deal is not the only way to get product out to radio stations and broadcast media. Since the growth of the internet, a lot of reasons record labels’ support was so important are not as necessary now as they were before.

Record companies gave us quality control over products that were released commercially simply because only the strongest or best promoted artists got contracts. As anyone who has been through the process knows, this statement is an over-simplification but suit’s the purpose of this article. If you as an artist want to self produce, you must be aware that the quality of your product must be competitive with product that comes from record companies. CDs produced for commercial outlets and CDs produced for self promotion are for two separate audiences but can be one in the same. You as an artist must know that in order to catch a presenter’s ear and a consumer’s/customer’s ear a CD must be of high quality. It must demonstrate what you can offer as a performer and be commercially appealing.

The starting point must be to put out the best product you can. You should choose material, musicians and a studio that will guarantee that your product will show you at your best. If you can not afford to put out a world class production then you should prepare a demo only. A demo is produced specifically to “demonstrate” your strengths to those who will help to further your career. Something a little less than broadcast quality can achieve this. Part Two will address this more.

The focus of this article is to make you aware of the fact that once a CD is produced for broadcast it must be world class. No one listening to the radio should be able to distinguish your product from one produced by a major label. I have produced recordings for record labels and for individuals and have used the same sensibilities for both.

First, plan out your product. Know what you want it to be and choose the studio, musicians, engineer or producer that will achieve your desired result. I always suggest using a producer if you can because they offer an objective ear and will help you to keep your mind on your music and your performance on the recording. This producer can be as simple as using a musician you respect to “over-see” the production or actually getting an experienced producer to work on the project. In either case, the objective is to put out a product that will bring attention to you and your music. Kirk Whalum is a classic example of this. A record company recorded him and he was heard on the radio by a musician who actively sought him out. Had he been self produced and his product was well produced, he could have had the same success. The recording allowed his talent to be heard and the production quality did not get in his way. If you self produce, you must be aware of the fact that people you will never know hear your work and spread your name. A lot of record companies use people on recordings who have name recognition when producing a recording for a new artist. That is a great marketing move but is not necessarily the key to a good recording. Because chemistry is so important on a Jazz recording, sometimes it’s best for independent artists to record with a group with whom they have worked. Don’t go out and pay for A-list players who you’ve never worked with and expect a great recording. If you’re using material that suits you but the players are unfamiliar with you and/or the material, in a pinch, these players will do what they are comfortable doing. If this happens, you may not be comfortable with what they do. You may not be aware of the importance of communication and/or chemistry on a recording but I assure you, the Jazz listener is. The studio is not the place to rehearse or get to know one another, the clock is ticking and you’re paying for an expensive rehearsal place. In cases like this, as a producer I book the group for a gig prior to the recording date. Record the gig for your listening purposes so that you know what needs to be ironed out before stepping into the studio.

Secondly, I advise my record company clients and my independent artist clients to be aware of the fact that consumers do not like CDs that have too many contrasting styles on them. I have been upset when I hear a few cuts on the radio I like and then buy the CD only to find out it’s very different from what I wanted. I call these split personality recordings. They may be great demos to show your versatility but as commercial releases they fail. The cost of CDs today makes consumers bitter when they get duped into buying a CD that falls short of their expectations. Unhappy consumers tend to make their dissatisfaction known. Not only do you lose them as a supporter, you lose those who respect their judgment. They will let anyone who will listen to them know how unhappy with you they are! Of course, with mp3 outlets, consumers can simply buy the tracks they like and not buy the whole CD. If that’s your goal, there’s no need to manufacture a lot of CDs. All you need is enough for radio airplay and enough to serve as masters for mp3 outlets.

There’s much more to consider with self production and self promotion and part two will deal with the marketing aspects of self promotion and CD sales. Cheap and inexpensive are not the same and should not be confused.

New Releases and CD Reviews

"Juicy" Delivers!!

At last, comes “Juicy,” the highly anticipated debut CD release of pianist/ composer Earl “Big Juicy” Johnson, Jr. He has been heralded as one of the premiere composers/ producers of his era with an electric style that is nothing short of awesome. Earl’s music is cognitive and funky, even soul- wrenching. With his fiery solo style, complete with some delicious finger work, he has captivated audiences on five continents and has performed for several Dignitaries and Heads of State including Nelson Mandela and President- elect Barack Obama. But, after working with many of the music industry’s top legends, Earl blasts out front with this project. Talk about the ‘it’ factor, this guy’s got it in a major way. “Juicy” takes you on a complete musical journey with ten original masterpieces. The project is Contemporary, Jazzy, with a Serious R&B Twist. It takes an eclectic look into the mind of this prolific producer and songwriter. Earl makes the piano sing with all of the finesse and fluidity of a modern- day virtuoso. Each song pulls you deeper into Earl’s musical world and leaves you in high anticipation of what’s to come next. There will be no skipping around on this CD. You will definitely want to hear every song from start to finish. Whether you are listening to one of the highly charged (virtually danceable) red- hot tracks or one of the soulful, pensive ballads, your musical soul will be exalted.

“Juicy” is available online at:

FOURPLAY GENERATES HIGH ENERGY WITH HEADS UP DEBUT

New album features guest vocals by bass phenomenon Esperanza Spalding

According to some very basic laws of nature, when powerful forces come together, some form of energy is created – usually in large amounts. In music, the laws of interaction are no different. When keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East, guitarist Larry Carlton and drummer Harvey Mason come together as Fourplay, the result is Energy (HUCD 3146), the Heads Up debut of the acclaimed contemporary jazz quartet scheduled for worldwide release on September 23, 2008.

Energy grafts a variety of sounds – R&B, pop, African and more – to Fourplay’s unwavering jazz foundations. In addition to vocals by East – a charter member since the band’s inception in 1990 – the album also features a vocal track by Esperanza Spalding, the upright bassist, composer and vocalist who has recently taken the jazz world by storm with her self-titled recording debut earlier this year on Heads Up.

JEFF LORBER / Heard That Peak Records

Over three decades after breaking ground as leader of the pioneering Jeff Lorber Fusion, the Philly-born and bred composer, producer and keyboard legend is still keeping the vibes fresh and the grooves funky, inspiring contemporary jazz fans everywhere to exclaim with each new musical excursion: Heard That. On his highly anticipated Peak Records debut, Lorber keeps the soulful momentum going, collaborating brilliantly on pop, jazz, R&B and blues-influenced tracks--and even harkening back a bit to his early 80s Fusion heyday--with one of urban jazz's top hit makers and sonic architects, Rex Rideout.

Highlighted by a swinging, bluesy-brass twist on Amy Winehouse's Grammy winning "Rehab," (the first single,) Heard That features a typically vibrant Lorber all-star guest list, including trumpet great Rick Braun, guitarist Paul Jackson, Jr., bassist Alex Al, and Peak labelmate, saxman Gerald Albright. Lorber has been touring all throughout 2008 as part of Guitars & Saxes with Albright, Jessy J, Jeff Golub and Peter White.

KEVYN LETTAU & PETER SPRAGUE
"WHAT IS ENOUGH"
REVIEW BY STEVE GETZ
WRITER, THE JAZZ NETWORK
NOVEMBER 2008

Vocalist Kevyn Lettau teams up with Guitarist/Producer Peter Sprague to offer the jazz world a lively, vibrant recording of originals and standards, on the recording, entitled "What Is Enough?".

The Los Angeles based singer engages us, the listener, with twelve songs, highlighting the voice of Ms. Lettau, who possesses a light, lively and sensual voice. She has the most important ingredient of any song stylist: Her voice, her sound, is uniquely her own! She doesn't invite or attempt comparisons to other vocalists.

Mr. Sprague is a talented, accomplished, polished and sensitive accompanist. The sound of his acoustic guitar is somewhat reminiscent of the late legendary brazilian guitarist and composer, Luiz Bonfa. His execution of notes and chords on his guitar are flawless, clean and concise.

I particularly enjoyed their musical reading of "The Waters Of March", the Antonio Carlos Jobim tune, which is now considered a standard. Ms. Lettau comes up with a refreshing rendition, which is the mark of a gifted performer. She sings the lyrics in both english and impeccable portugese.

This writer first became aware of Kevyn Lettau when she sang "Blackbird" on a tenor saxophonist Harry Allen recording.
She has grown by leaps and bounds since I first heard her voice. She has developed into a truly well defined, musical professional, with a voice and spirit which again I say, is truly her very own! This is a beautiful recording, which I highly suggest you listen to! Bravo!
