HERVE SAMB

Born in Rufisque, Senegal, guitarist and composer Hervé Samb discovered his musical passion at the age of 9 years old. Fascinated by the traditional rhythms of his heritage and the progressive music of the African American culture, Samb was determined to develop his own music as a force of Panafrican expression and identity.
His first band, The Hervé Samb Quintet, was a Blues-driven ensemble. Together they performed at prestigious Senegalese events and venues like the Saint Louis Jazz Festival, sharing the stage with Lucky Peterson and McCoy Tyner. Samb soon met fellow guitarist Pierre Van Dormal, who not only became his mentor, but also inspired him to seriously pursue Jazz.
Completely self-taught, Samb perfected his awareness of harmony and his original technique through urban jam sessions. In August 1998, he arrived in France and soon caught the attention of some of the hottest Parisian musicians. It is the beginning of a international career: Amadou & Mariam, David Murray, Meshell Ndegeocello, Phaoroah Sanders, Cheikh Tidiane Seck, Jacques Schwarz-Bart, Richard Bohringer… to say a few.

Continuing his musical journey, Samb has begun to record and tour with his own band. His last project CROSS OVER, completely driven by original compositions is homage to the world’s diversity. Through a harmonious mix of genres, CROSS OVER tells the story of many lands, people and cultures.
Herve Samb appears to be a synthesis of the traditional Senegalese rhythms, the free jazz, blues and modern Rock that all deeply influenced the artist. Loyal to his art, Samb matches improvisation and synchronization to redefines the musical color of the African groove!

Discography:
2007 – Meshell Ndegeocello, “The World has made me the man of my dream”
2007 – Somi, “Red soil in my eyes”
2006 – World Saxophone Quartet, “Political Blues”
2006 – Boney Fields & the Bone’s project, “We Play The Blues”
2006 – Meshell Ndegeocello, “The Article 3”
2006 – Kdr-Society, “Welcom to village”
2005 – Kdr-Society, “Last flight from Rwanda”
2004 – David Murray & The Gwoka Masters (avec Pharoah Sanders), “Gwotet”
2002 – Boney Fields & the Bone’s project, “Red Wolf”
1999 – Boney Fields & the Bone’s project, “Hard Work”

Salut Lucia,
Christophe

It’s a rare occasion when you meet someone who you feel a real connection to … Someone who possesses a kind spirit, unyielding generosity and a dedication to the jazz community beyond expectations.

Jaijai, thank you so much for creating such a fantastic website for the jazz community. You’ve helped artists connect with each other around the world.

I’m proud to have The Jazz Network be the first site to promote my latest recording. Words cannot express my gratitude to you for your dedication to the music and the artists.

With much love and gratitude,
Denise Donatelli

Hi Jaijai,

Stopping by to show you some love and tell you just how much I appreciate all you've been doing here, not just for me but for this incredible community of jazz musicians. I see that The Jazz Network is growing in leaps and bounds daily and want you to know that I recognize the importance of what's going on here, musicians having a place to connect with each other, young musicians having a place to meet and be mentored by musicians who have been around the block. You've created a beautiful space here and it's obvious that folks are feeling very much at home. Thanks for sharing your time, your heart, your soul. This is a huge commitment and you've taken it on with such determination. I wish you and The Jazz Network continued success and support you in all you're doing.

“But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between us. Love one another, and let the love be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”

This is how I have felt and continue to feel since I joined The Jazz Network on March 4th 2008.
If we look back at our Village Elders one sees how they worked together to achieve and be innovative, and thanks to Jaijai and thejazznetwork.ning we are able to continue on the same path as our Village Elders.

"Thanks to Jaijai for creating this wonderful site. She has drawn on her own extensive history in music to make a truly comfortable place for "unusual" kindred spirits to meet, share and motivate. It's been uplifting, comforting and facinating to meet fellow musicians from cultures and countries around the world."

What a great place you have created, Jaijai. Thank you so much for your dedication and vision. We musicians benefit immensely, as it brings us closer together, allows for many of us to reconnect, or discover each other for the first time. I am still getting acquainted with the enormous benefits of having this independent place for communication between all of us - artists, fans, promoters, etc., and it is a real honor for me to be featured on the Jazz Network Main Page.
