Creative Jazz Vocal Artist, Composer, Lyricist, Poet, Writer, Actor - Various Projects include: Co-leader of ConceptualMotion 20-piece all original music Orchestra with alto saxophonist Jorge Sylvester, an Avant-Garde Voice and Saxophone Duo, A Small Dream In Red, with Jorge Sylvester, The Nora McCarthy Qu'ART'et, Organizer and featured member of, A Chorus of Poets, founded by Conductor, Lawrence D. 'Butch' Morris and The Beyond Words Voice and Bass Duo with Dominic Duval.
McCarthy began writing lyrics in the early '80s and has penned lyrics to songs written by J.J. Johnson, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Denny Zeitlin, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Jorge Sylvester and Lucian Ban..
Recently, McCarthy took her literary and performance abilities to the stage and realized a long held dream - acting. Nora is associated with AIDA (Australian Institute of Dramatic Arts) and studies with renowned stage actor Robyn Lee and privately with Paul Parker, its founder.
WORKSHOPS/MASTER CLASSES/CONFERENCES
Many of McCarthy's compositions and poems embody the history of jazz and she has written poetry and extended compositions for several of the masters of the music namely: Charlie Parker, Jeanne Lee, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy; Billie Holiday (Billie), Miles Davis (Miles' Mind), Sonny Rollins (Into The Middle of Something), Grover Washington (Grover's Groove), and her most recent masterpiece, (Faith In Time - aka, Jimmy's Song), a tribute to Little Jimmy Scott and titled after the name of his autobiography published in 2002. These works document the creative and historical significance of each artist and their contributions to Jazz music. Through lecture and performance McCarthy presents an informative and memorable presentation.
Through her vast experience in the jazz and creative music field, McCarthy conducts various kinds of workshops and classes that deal with vocal empowerment. Nora has developed a unique approach to teaching voice and improvisation and is founder of "The Zen Of Singing...The Spiritual Path To Finding Your Voice". A book by the same name is forthcoming.

When you were born,
your perfection and your purpose
were united,
and you
“Became”
One
with a Universal Consciousness
a wondrous manifestation of the mystery called
-Life -
… a fully-equipped and unique "individual" work of art.
Thus your strengths and your weakness together
[each one necessary to the other]
became your lessons and your blessings;
your pathway to fulfillment.
Their interdependence is the motivating force behind
all knowledge and the quest for a higher collective consciousness
of man - EVOLUTION.
This is the function of Art and the essence of Improvisation.
When you were chosen to be a musician
you became responsible
for the gift you were given.
When you took your first breath
it was already written
and your life became Word
and your bond was your commitment to your instrument.
When you accept your beauty through music in its totality
you begin your journey
as a seeker
of truth,
a disciple
of free thinking,
an innovator,
a revolutionary conceptualist,
a dispeller of theoretic myths and creative oppression,
a liberator of dogmatic thought processes
and, finally
a MASTER
whose musical voice becomes the messenger
that carries the Word
of a collective consciousness -
of a higher power based on the abandonment of fear and the ideal of
Love.
All things in their own time will transpire
and come to fruition.
Trust in the spirit that flows through you.
Stay humble, follow your heart and your inner voice
[the Word] will guide you.
There is no right , wrong or other way -
YOU are a work in progress,
an ARTIST,
and the collective learning of all who have gone before you
and who have yet to come
was given to you when you were chosen
….. your life’s work is your song.
Never allow false-self-proclaimed musical messiahs
to deter you or discourage you
[and they are many]
with projections of their own
imperfections and failures.
Better that you be a reflection
of light and positivity
than to mirror their ignorance.
We are all equal and deserving
under the sun of enlightenment.
They did not create you nor do they have any power over you.
Before music was documented
it was a FEELING,
it was EXPLORING and EXPERIMENTING
and “HEARING”
through SOUND and an inner VOICE communicating
and only after LISTENING, “EXPERIENCING”
and TRANSLATING
did it become READING!
And, in that order it must it be encouraged
both in teaching and learning
if Music is to go on
-“Living” -
-“Being” –
and
-“Healing. -

INSPIRATIONAL CORNER
Uncle Hugh 'Peanuts' Whalum is my 80 year-old uncle who has FORGOTTEN more about jazz than I've even learned yet! He released his CD "Introducing Hugh 'Peanuts' Whalum" after gigging in the St. Louis scene for over 55 years! Needless to say his voice, his saxophone, his piano... like a fine, aged Merlot. His energy?! I dare not try and keep up. I'm on stage falling asleep by the time he gets going good – cut from a different cloth. Arnette, Coleman, Hamp, Hank... fine cloth.
Why do I bring them up? Because they represent something really important that we now get to enjoy, like they did back then, but now through technology on sites like this, that we've been missing.
The good news, since family – in this case JAZZ FAMILY – and relationships are much more important, more fulfilling... is that I feel RICHER knowing and following you guys music on THE JAZZ NETWORK!

Finding THE JAZZ NETWORK has been an amazing experience for Musique Noire. The opportunity to not only gain exposure among the jazz community, but to also learn and network with others in the jazz world has been invaluable. Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.
I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. I am so honored to be on The Jazz Network with so many wonderful and dedicated musicians. Jazz is the truly American art form and as I travel to other countries I find that their appreciation for jazz is really uplifting. There are so many excellent jazz musicians around the world now and The Jazz Network is helping us to find each other. Thank goodness for people like Jaijai who have dedicated so much time and effort to keep the jazz community together and for opening doors to us that we may never have found.
Regarding education in jazz, having done Master Classes in many places I find students need to take time and learn from the Masters and LISTEN. They should go back in history to appreciate ALL styles of jazz and its development. They need to learn melodies and lyrics (yes, even instrumentalists need to know lyrics) and that jazz is not just a series of modes and riffs. I think The Jazz Network can be an excellent tool for that also.
