BIO

Ivan Hampden was born and raised in New York City and grew up in Harlem's musically diverse neighborhoods listening to the rhythms of R&B, Salsa, Caribbean, Jazz, Blues, Pop and so much more. He began playing drums at the age of eight with the local Catholic school marching band. By age 13, he was playing in local clubs in and around New York City with Blues musicians who helped instill in him his sense of timing and groove. He brings the musical diversity of his early youth to his work with percussion and keyboards as well.

Ivan started his formal training in 1973 studying at the Jazz Mobile with Charlie Percep and at Mannes College of Music with Norman Grossman. He went on to attend Bronx Community College in 1977 where he received private lessons at the Metropolitan Opera with Richard Horowitz
and then on to Rutgers University in 1980. During his first semester, a friend told him of the Dance Theatre of Harlem. He joined that orchestra, where he continues to enjoy tenure. While at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ivan was also a Drum and Percussion Instructor at the Harlem School of the Arts and at Seaton Hall University in the Black Music Department. His talent has also been enjoyed in the New York theatre community with the likes of The Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, The Richard Allen Center for Cultural arts (RACCA), as well as on Broadway.

Ivan A. Hampden Jr. (continued)

Not only an accomplished drummer and percussionist, Ivan is also a producer and songwriter who collaborates with such artists as Luther Vandross, Nick Ashford, Chaka Khan, and many others.
He is a proficient studio musician as well as a charismatic
tour musician with a worldwide travel itinerary. Along with being Luther Vandross' drummer and co-writing partner for the last 17 years, he currently records and tours with other notable artists such as Stephanie Mills, Ashford & Simpson, Roberta Flack, Phil Perry, Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Lopez. Ivan has also performed behind such Artist as Bonnie Raitt, Al Jareau, Dione Warwick, Maceo Parker, El Debarge, Kenny Latimore, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Michael MacDonald, India Arie & Joe; the list goes on and on.

His recording resume includes such artists as Diana Ross, Akiko Yano, Ann Nesby, Doc Powell, Jocelyn Brown, Mavis Staples, The Temptations, Nestor Torres, Marcus Miller, Cathy Dennis, Howard Hewett, Luther Vandross, Beyonce Knowles, Ashford & Simpson, Sy Coleman, Tramaine Hawkins & Roberta Flack just to name a few.

In 2001, Ivan relocated to the south, where he continues to write, produce and tour around the world from. In His latest venture, he has started a school of percussion in the Raleigh North Carolina area, as well as working with local talent and teaching recording production at North Carolina Central University.

It’s a rare occasion when you meet someone who you feel a real connection to … Someone who possesses a kind spirit, unyielding generosity and a dedication to the jazz community beyond expectations.

Jaijai, thank you so much for creating such a fantastic website for the jazz community. You’ve helped artists connect with each other around the world.

I’m proud to have The Jazz Network be the first site to promote my latest recording. Words cannot express my gratitude to you for your dedication to the music and the artists.

With much love and gratitude,
Denise Donatelli

Hi Jaijai,

Stopping by to show you some love and tell you just how much I appreciate all you've been doing here, not just for me but for this incredible community of jazz musicians. I see that The Jazz Network is growing in leaps and bounds daily and want you to know that I recognize the importance of what's going on here, musicians having a place to connect with each other, young musicians having a place to meet and be mentored by musicians who have been around the block. You've created a beautiful space here and it's obvious that folks are feeling very much at home. Thanks for sharing your time, your heart, your soul. This is a huge commitment and you've taken it on with such determination. I wish you and The Jazz Network continued success and support you in all you're doing.

“But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between us. Love one another, and let the love be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”

This is how I have felt and continue to feel since I joined The Jazz Network on March 4th 2008.
If we look back at our Village Elders one sees how they worked together to achieve and be innovative, and thanks to Jaijai and thejazznetwork.ning we are able to continue on the same path as our Village Elders.

"Thanks to Jaijai for creating this wonderful site. She has drawn on her own extensive history in music to make a truly comfortable place for "unusual" kindred spirits to meet, share and motivate. It's been uplifting, comforting and facinating to meet fellow musicians from cultures and countries around the world."

What a great place you have created, Jaijai. Thank you so much for your dedication and vision. We musicians benefit immensely, as it brings us closer together, allows for many of us to reconnect, or discover each other for the first time. I am still getting acquainted with the enormous benefits of having this independent place for communication between all of us - artists, fans, promoters, etc., and it is a real honor for me to be featured on the Jazz Network Main Page.
