Tell us a little about you....
"Warmly delicious full bodied vocals with a hint of smokiness that will envelop and surprise you!"

Raised in the small town of Dundas Ontario, Canada, Margot began performing in school musicals, and on local TV telethons. She performed in an all female Mariachi band in Mexico and many talent contests were won. Throughout her childhood Margot shared in her family's diverse musical experiences: opera, folk, jazz and musical theatre. Aesthetically, this infusion of extensive musical genres has led Margot to an inclusionist style with an unfettered exhberant approach.

'A Place For Me' Margot Roi's latest recording is an eclectic collection of songs that approach the subject of love from all possible perspectives to affirm a place in your heart! Margot arranged all compositions to reflect the diverse musical nature of her performing experience. To give the album a fresh jazz sound Margot recorded with some of Canada's top musicians: Kelly Jefferson, William Carn, Mike Downes, Reg Schwager, Mark Kelso, Ted Quinlan, Ted Warren, John Johnson, Brian O'Kane, Alan Hetherington and more. Margot has studied music at the University of Windsor, at the Canadian Academy for Vocal Music and with Bob Mover. She has also received a Bach of Fine Arts, a Arts and Tech Degree, played the trombone in the school band, and learned the ukulele/autoharp/guitar at her father's knee. "When I perform vocally, I want the audience to experience a little fun. I choose lyrics that intensify the emotive colourations of my interpretative style, to further inhabit the textured atmosphere laid down by the other musicians."

“Canadian jazz diva Margot Roi approaches the topic of love via jazz and pop standards that accentuate her graceful and irrefutably, optimistic mode of delivery. And she garners the very best out of the several musicians appearing on this amiable studio date, augmented by a get-up-and-go vibe that features lush phrasings amid brisk swing vamps and more.

The vocalist possesses an authoritative delivery that is counterbalanced with sincerity and her emotively generated lyricism. Here, Roi sparkles through jazz waltzes and sultry late-night blues vamps, where the instrumentalists are quite diligent when it comes to providing the requisite contrasts. Nonetheless, the artists’ thriving momentum serves as an accelerator during many of these standards.

On “All Or Nothing At All,” Roi casts a dream-laden edge atop an oscillating swing. In addition, she perpetuates a democratic mindset as the alternating personnel are afforded room to breathe and expand while often counterbalancing the leader’s spirited vocalizations. No doubt, Roi is one who has a realistic shot at becoming a household name among the horde of up and coming female jazz vocalists. She injects panache, pep and a noticeable mark of distinction into the roads previously traversed.” – Glenn Astarita Ejazz News

"The most recent release by Margot Roi is wonderful. The repertoire is first class and the backing features the cream of Toronto musicians. She has an excellent sense of swing and phrasing. All in all a great CD."
---Jacques Emond CKCU-FM Ottawa

"This is a great CD and a must for any Jazz Program. I play tracks from this album on a regular basis in particular I love the interpretations that Margot has done to the Lennon and McCartney tracks"
---Martin Smith Radio Seagull

"Even though it is a Margot Roi album she has wisely let the musicians show their stuff. The CD features top notch Canadian Jazzers and they seem to have been given the green light to blow. Margot has a smooth voice and good control. Selecting which tunes to play on my jazz show could prove difficult as there are many strong tracks to choose from. There is no doubt, Margot is a fine vocalist."

Hi Margot,

You have a beautiful, fresh voice with lovely, rich low tones and a very sultry sense of swing.. I especially love your rendition of Gordon Lightfoot's 'Pussywillows'.

Toronto is my home town. I went to Humber College quite a few years back and I also used Mike Downes on my first CD. Love his playing.....
Please give him my regards.

I made a mistake, tho' on your friendship request by pushing the 'Block User' button by mistake. Ooops! Will try to remedy that a.s.a.p.

Best wishes,
Diane

It’s a rare occasion when you meet someone who you feel a real connection to … Someone who possesses a kind spirit, unyielding generosity and a dedication to the jazz community beyond expectations.

Jaijai, thank you so much for creating such a fantastic website for the jazz community. You’ve helped artists connect with each other around the world.

I’m proud to have The Jazz Network be the first site to promote my latest recording. Words cannot express my gratitude to you for your dedication to the music and the artists.

With much love and gratitude,

Hi Jaijai,

Stopping by to show you some love and tell you just how much I appreciate all you've been doing here, not just for me but for this incredible community of jazz musicians. I see that The Jazz Network is growing in leaps and bounds daily and want you to know that I recognize the importance of what's going on here, musicians having a place to connect with each other, young musicians having a place to meet and be mentored by musicians who have been around the block. You've created a beautiful space here and it's obvious that folks are feeling very much at home. Thanks for sharing your time, your heart, your soul. This is a huge commitment and you've taken it on with such determination. I wish you and The Jazz Network continued success and support you in all you're doing.

“But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between us. Love one another, and let the love be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”

This is how I have felt and continue to feel since I joined The Jazz Network on March 4th 2008.
If we look back at our Village Elders one sees how they worked together to achieve and be innovative, and thanks to Jaijai and thejazznetwork.ning we are able to continue on the same path as our Village Elders.

What a great place you have created, Jaijai. Thank you so much for your dedication and vision. We musicians benefit immensely, as it brings us closer together, allows for many of us to reconnect, or discover each other for the first time. I am still getting acquainted with the enormous benefits of having this independent place for communication between all of us - artists, fans, promoters, etc., and it is a real honor for me to be featured on the Jazz Network Main Page.
