Tell us a little about you....
At the age of 8 he started learning the guitar and at the age of ten he already played with his friends performing at various schools in Salvador. At the same time, under the influence of Vandinho de Carvalho and Marcelo Brasil, he started his drum lessons at the music school Escola de Música (EMUS) da Universidade Federal da Bahia under the supervision of Jorge Onca and Jorge Sacramento and his fellow student was Lula Nascimento, a great name of world Jazz. At the age of 18 he moved to Belo Horizonte after being invited to perform in Minas Gerais. So far he has performed with various groups and artists such as: Júlia Ribas, Banda Orkídea, Juliano Mourão do Omeriah, Vitor and Leo, Leandro Lima, Kenia Aguiar, Swing de palha, Programa Caravana Band, as a musical director and arranger, where he accompanied Nonato and Noel, Bob Charles, Riginaldo Rossi Couver, among others. He has participated in a joint musical project with musicians Glayson Antônio and Marcos Garcia, he also played with the group Vil Metal, former members of the group Skank, and at the spectacle Los del Roccio da Fátima Carreteiro at the Palacio das Artes in December 2001. In 2001 he also started to perform with a great local singer Play, ex-Nepal (at present he is a back vocal of the group J.Quest e Kid Monteiro da Timbalada). Puppa Santana has been teaching drums since his arrival to Minas Gerais in 1993. He has taught at Casa Azul Escola de Musica, at Cultural Centre Nansen Araújo (SESI MG), at Unicentro Newton Paiva and at his own school TEMA - Traditional school of Music and Art. Puppa has studied with Santiago Reither who comes from Havana-Club, is master of percusion and was a part of the group Sonora Havanera. Puppa has also studied with Esdras Ferreira, who is known as Neném Batera, was a former drummer of Milton Nascimento and is currently working with Beto Guedes. On 11th January 2002 he recorded his live demo CD at Utopica Marcenaria with cooperation of Fábio Gonçalves (guitar) and Aloísio Horta (contrabass). At the same time as developing this project of his her was playing with well-known musicians. In March 2002 his work was presented in many cities of Minas Gerais state, such as Itaúna, Para de Minas, Ouro Preto and Divinópolis. He was also requested to play at best places of Belo Horizonte for example: Café Belas Artes, Reciclo Asmare Cultural, Café Status and Choperia Tapas where he was playing for several months and the show was visited by many important people like athletes, politicians, musicians, journalists and critics. In year 2004 he took part in a project Léo Stalone (producers of events) under the patron ship of the industrialist Anderson Luciano (owner of Cafezinho Lounge), radio Antena 1 and Chivas Regal. Puppa has had the privilege to play with excellent musicians Chico Amaral (arranger and composer of Skank and Daniela Mercury among others), Beto Lopes, Enéas Xavier, Ricardo Fiúza (keyboard player of Fernanda Abreu), Kleber Alves, Toninho Horta, etc. In 2005 Puppa worked briefly with a rock group Tana 1 and played at Noite de Salvador with friends Cesário Leone, Luisinho Assis e Paulo Andrade. In April he started an Afro-Brazilian musical exploration, especially exploring northeast rhythms and making creative music with elements of pop, classical music and elements from different cultures without losing the Brazilian core. At the end of 2006 he returned to Belo Horizonte to start a new journey, working in a studio, conducting, arranging making a CD of Banda Deriva and of other artists of different styles. He played at nights with the singer Renato Mattos and a singer and composer POP Daniel Bravo. He returned with his instrumental work in high and good style presenting a temporada in February 2007 at Café Status and not long after at Villa Rizza where he was presenting until the month of May. He also played at charming and elegant restaurants Botica, Graciliano and Friday’s on weekly basis. Puppa commemorated his 32nd birthday by producing and playing with the spectacular singer and composer Claudio Zoli from Rio de Janeiro at Betim and at Café da Travessa on 7th and 8th of July 2007.

It’s a rare occasion when you meet someone who you feel a real connection to … Someone who possesses a kind spirit, unyielding generosity and a dedication to the jazz community beyond expectations.

Jaijai, thank you so much for creating such a fantastic website for the jazz community. You’ve helped artists connect with each other around the world.

I’m proud to have The Jazz Network be the first site to promote my latest recording. Words cannot express my gratitude to you for your dedication to the music and the artists.

With much love and gratitude,
Denise Donatelli

Hi Jaijai,

Stopping by to show you some love and tell you just how much I appreciate all you've been doing here, not just for me but for this incredible community of jazz musicians. I see that The Jazz Network is growing in leaps and bounds daily and want you to know that I recognize the importance of what's going on here, musicians having a place to connect with each other, young musicians having a place to meet and be mentored by musicians who have been around the block. You've created a beautiful space here and it's obvious that folks are feeling very much at home. Thanks for sharing your time, your heart, your soul. This is a huge commitment and you've taken it on with such determination. I wish you and The Jazz Network continued success and support you in all you're doing.

“But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between us. Love one another, and let the love be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”

This is how I have felt and continue to feel since I joined The Jazz Network on March 4th 2008.
If we look back at our Village Elders one sees how they worked together to achieve and be innovative, and thanks to Jaijai and thejazznetwork.ning we are able to continue on the same path as our Village Elders.

"Thanks to Jaijai for creating this wonderful site. She has drawn on her own extensive history in music to make a truly comfortable place for "unusual" kindred spirits to meet, share and motivate. It's been uplifting, comforting and facinating to meet fellow musicians from cultures and countries around the world."

What a great place you have created, Jaijai. Thank you so much for your dedication and vision. We musicians benefit immensely, as it brings us closer together, allows for many of us to reconnect, or discover each other for the first time. I am still getting acquainted with the enormous benefits of having this independent place for communication between all of us - artists, fans, promoters, etc., and it is a real honor for me to be featured on the Jazz Network Main Page.
