Tell us a little about you....
I am a Canadian jazz singer/pianist residing in Berlin. I had my musical debut as an 11-year old in Canada (really) with my vocal ensemble, The Brothers & The Sisters, performing folk songs from the great artists of the time, such Bob Dylan, Peter Paul & Mary and Joni Mitchell but it wasn't until I first heard Carole King's 'It's Too Late' and Roberta Flack's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' in my mid-teens that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in music.

In my early 20's, I studied jazz voice, piano and arranging at Humber College in Toronto. then went on to study Bel Canto vocal technique in New York under the tutelage of Cornelius Reid, where my voice expanded into a 3 & ½ octave range, allowing me to sing easily and effortlessly in all styles.

From there, I won a scholarship to study Musical Theatre at The Banff School of Fine Arts with Canada's David Warrick and Broadway musical director Lehman Engel who discovered Barbra Streisand for her the lead role in the hit musical 'I Can Get It For You Wholesale'.

Over the next few years, I performed in musical theatre, television and film across Canada until 1986 when I was offered an extensive European tour as a solo singer/pianist, bringing me back to my musical roots. It was there I developed my extensive, timeless repertoire -- singing lyrics with truth in them from the 1920's right up to the present day.

When people hear me sing, I want them to feel not just good....but to feel the joy that comes from their souls being touched as well.

A warm hello to ALL .....

Lately, I have been performing mostly solo and only sometimes in other formations from duo to quartet -- mostly here in Berlin but would never turn down an interesting gig elsewhere, casting a large net always. As they say.......HOME is Where the HEART is and I would add to that........Home is where the HEARTSONG is. Best wishes on your respective musical journeys !

Hi Diane,

Thanks so much for your comment on my video. Since it was my first time playing spontaneously, I was really terrified. I'm so glad the crowd liked it, or I think I might have been "crushed."

I'm honored to have you for a friend.

Mikayla
P.S. Your voice is simply amazing, so clear and pure - wonderful!

It’s a rare occasion when you meet someone who you feel a real connection to … Someone who possesses a kind spirit, unyielding generosity and a dedication to the jazz community beyond expectations.

Jaijai, thank you so much for creating such a fantastic website for the jazz community. You’ve helped artists connect with each other around the world.

I’m proud to have The Jazz Network be the first site to promote my latest recording. Words cannot express my gratitude to you for your dedication to the music and the artists.

Hi Jaijai,

Stopping by to show you some love and tell you just how much I appreciate all you've been doing here, not just for me but for this incredible community of jazz musicians. I see that The Jazz Network is growing in leaps and bounds daily and want you to know that I recognize the importance of what's going on here, musicians having a place to connect with each other, young musicians having a place to meet and be mentored by musicians who have been around the block. You've created a beautiful space here and it's obvious that folks are feeling very much at home. Thanks for sharing your time, your heart, your soul. This is a huge commitment and you've taken it on with such determination. I wish you and The Jazz Network continued success and support you in all you're doing.

“But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between us. Love one another, and let the love be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”

This is how I have felt and continue to feel since I joined The Jazz Network on March 4th 2008.
If we look back at our Village Elders one sees how they worked together to achieve and be innovative, and thanks to Jaijai and thejazznetwork.ning we are able to continue on the same path as our Village Elders.

What a great place you have created, Jaijai. Thank you so much for your dedication and vision. We musicians benefit immensely, as it brings us closer together, allows for many of us to reconnect, or discover each other for the first time. I am still getting acquainted with the enormous benefits of having this independent place for communication between all of us - artists, fans, promoters, etc., and it is a real honor for me to be featured on the Jazz Network Main Page.
